A Pan-Yoruba Social Cultural Organisation, the Defence for Yoruba People’s (DYPR) has lamented over what it called poor state and decay of infrastructural development in various Correctional Centres across the country.
The group also lamented over poor feeding and welfare of inmates at various Correctional Centres, the Yoruba group particularly lamented over the activities of the government for allegedly approving seven hundred naira only per day as feeding allowances for each inmate across the federation.
The Yoruba group in statement signed by its National President and Secretary, Otunba Muyideen Olamoyegun and Comrade Bolawa Akindolie respectively, threatened to approach the court and institute legal action against the Minister Interior, Honourable Oyetunji Ojo and other relevant stakeholders in the ministry.
The DYPR explained that its members recently paid a visit to the Medium Security Custodian Centre, Olokuta, Akure Ondo State, lamented over poor what it called poor state of development in the area.
The group particularly mentioned the total black out, and lack of water and insufficient bedding and mattresses and over population of inmates at the centre.
Lamenting over huge numbers of the mentally derailed persons and other patients suffering different ailments in the Akure, Medium Security Custodian Centre, the DYPR called on the government, public spirited individuals as well as members of the public to assist the inmates in providing fund for the treatment of the inmates.
An official of the Akure Correctional Centre, who may not want his name mentioned, lamented over what he called infection and diseases occasioned by the over population of inmates at the centre, solicited for the supports of the members of the public to provide vaccines, hospital equipments and treatment of inmates.
The Prison official equally called on the members of the public to come to the aide of the inmates in the payment of fines and compensation for inmates, saying the move would aids de-congestion of the Centre.
