EKSG moves to banned styrofoam, as ATWAP donates waste bins to keep Ekiti clean

As part of the move by the Ekiti State Government towards enhancing clean and hygienic environment, the Commissioner for Environment, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe-Aluko, has disclosed the plans of the government to banned the use of styrofoam in the State.

Aluko made disclosure on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, while receiving large quantity of plastic waste bins donated by the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) Ekiti State chapter to the Government.

The Commissioner explained that the plans of the government to banned the use of styrofoam popularly known as takeaway is one of the activities of the present administration in the state under the leadership of Mr Biodun Oyebanji to enhance greener and clean environment.

She commended the association over the donations and described it as a laudable project, noted that the support will go a long way in safeguarding the lives of Ekiti people.

Aluko called on the association to always adhere to the necessary guidelines in their various factories, while stressing the needs for the residents of the state to join hands in ensuring a healthy and clean environment.

She explained that the association is one of the ministry’s regulated bodies that serve the public and it is the duty of the ministry to regulate the activities of the association, saying the move would further ensure that both sachet and bottled water are produced in a clean and hygienic environment in order to prevent infectious or contagious diseases.

While assuring the association of the supports of the ministry, equally promised that the materials donated will be effective utilized and justify the purpose for which ot was donated.

She reiterated the readiness of the Ekiti State Government towards ensuring clean and hygienic environment so as to make the state habitable and vibrant for residents to live.

Donating the materials on behalf of the association, the Chairman of ATWAP, Ekiti State Chapter, Mr Ademola Oyaleke said the donation is part of the association’s social responsibility in keeping the state clean at all the times.

Oyaleke explained that the association has commenced engaging its members through sensitization workshops on the need to produce hygienic water for people of the state.

He further revealled that the association has set aside every first Thursday of the month for the cleaning of their factories and other strategic places, apparently to keep the state clean, adding that no member is also permitted to distribute water same day.

In their goodwill messages delivered at the occasion, representatives of National Food and Drug Commission (NAFDAC) and that of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, (SON) charged producers of purewater in Ekiti state to imbibe the culture of quality in production of purewater for the benefit of consumers.

Similarly , the National President of ATWAP, Clementina Ativie, represented by the South-West/Kwara Zonal Chairman, Ademola Adeyeye said the programme is the third in series to be held by the zone.

He commended the efforts of the state government in ensuring a cleaner and hygienic environment, urged other states in the zone to emulate Ekiti State government in ensuring a cleaning environment at all the time.

The highpoint of the programme held in Ado-Ekiti was the presentation of the large quantity of the plastic waste bins to the government. It was attended by members of the association within and outside Ado-Ekiti.
